When to Deposit Employment Taxes

There are two deposit schedules for employment taxes:

  1. Monthly, or
  2. Semiweekly

These two schedules determine WHEN you must deposit the following taxes:

  1. Federal income taxes withheld
  2. Social security taxes
    • Employee's and employer's share
  3. Medicare taxes
    • Employee's and employer's share

These deposit schedules tell you when a deposit is due after a tax liability arises, for example, when you have a payday.

Tip: The best time to make an employment tax deposit is the same day you pay your employees. This way, you'll avoid late deposit penalties and have one less thing on your to-do list. (You can make a deposit anytime up to the deposit due date.)
